Sep 16 , 2011

Copenhagen is a city known for its rich and exciting history and culture, but it doesn't end there. Whether you're a visitor or a resident, you will soon learn that there's more to this city than meets the eye. Everyone will be able to find some fun things to do in Copenhagen.

1. The Copenhagen Opera House

Located at Ekvipagemestervej 10, the Copenhagen Opera House is one of Denmark's largest and most interesting modern buildings. This building, designed by a Danish architect, Henning Larsen, was decorated by talented Danish artists. It also contains 14 floors and over 1,000 rooms, including rehearsal rooms and stages.

Of all the things to do in Copenhagen, the Opera House is sure to be a hit with theater and ballet lovers, or just those who appreciate architecture. The main stage can accommodate roughly 1,500 theater goers, while the experimental stage can accommodate 200. Bars and restaurants are also open to ticket holders.

2. Bakken Amusement Park

When looking for things to do in Copenhagen, kids and kids at heart will often be thrilled with the amusement parks in the area. The full name of Bakken Amusement park is Dyrehavsbakken, which translates to "The Deer Park Hill". Residents and visitors alike, however, typically refer to it as Bakken, or "The Hill". It is located on the old Royal hunting grounds, and it is considered to be the oldest amusement park in the world that is still operational.

Although it started out as an animal park in 1669, today Bakken is one of the most popular amusement parks in the area. Along with a handful of roller coasters, park goers can also entertain themselves with carnival games and circus performances. Live music is also played periodically in some of the dozens of restaurants and bars located in the park.

3. Tivoli Gardens

Tivoli GardensCopenhagen is also home to the second oldest amusement park in the world, Tivoli Gardens. Although Nazi sympathizers burned many of the buildings during World War II, this amusement park has been rebuilt and is still operational today.

This tourist hotspot is home to several fun things to do in Copenhagen, and it is even believed that Walt Disney got his inspiration from Tivoli Gardens when he was planning Disney World. Besides being home to one of the oldest operational wooden roller coasters in the world, this amusement park also contains a concert hall and pantomime theater, along with several gardens.

4. Copenhagen Zoo

Built in 1859, the Copenhagen Zoo is one of the oldest zoos in Europe as well as being one of the more popular things to do in Copenhagen. In recent years, zoo officials have been focusing on bigger and better enclosures for the animals. This not only provides a happier home for the animals, but it also makes the experience better for visitors as well.

Foster's Elephant House is one of the most recent additions to the zoo. It is also one of the only zoos outside of Australia to house a Tazmanian devil. One of the world's most endangered cats, the amur leopard, is also housed here. It is believed that there are only a handful of these beautiful creatures left in the world.
